- Playing at the Fairs -

Playing many fair jobs, the band travelled in a caravan of cars and an equipment truck which carried the tents and cots and cooking supplies.  Walt Engelbart drove the car in which Karl King rode.

Karl King is shown in these photos from the 1924 Hawkeye Fair in Fort Dodge watching the show while conducting, so that he may coordinate the music with the act.  The trumpet player is John Magennis, who twice had served as temporary bandmaster of Fort Dodge's Iowa Military Band (for the 1917 and 1918 seasons until Carl Quist returned from his duties with the Eagle Grove Municipal Band, and again while the community searched for a new director after Carl Quist left the Fort Dodge area in 1920).
