The July 10th concert in Oleson Park featured quite a variety of marches, including Karl L. King’s Neddermeyer Triumphal and LSU Tiger Triumph. Also on the program was Merle Evans march, Symphonia, and Genaro Codina’s Mexican march Zacatecas. The galop for the evening was Eclipse, one of King’s famous circus galops.
Dr. Golemo, Director of Bands and the Head of the Department of Music at Iowa State University was the guest conductor for this concert. He led the band in two compositions that featured Jive For Five and the Karl King Band. The first selection was Mr. King's Broadway One-Step. The second selection featured a touch of the Big Band era with Dr. Mike Golemo's own arrangement, Glenn Miller Medley.
Jive For Five includes Tim Miller, Humboldt, trumpet; David Swaroff, Dayton, trumpet; Kathy Yoakam, Humboldt, French Horn; Dan Cassady, Iowa City, trombone; and Paul Bloomquist, Dayton, tuba. These musicians have been performing together for the past several years, and are always popular with audiences.
Karl King's overture miniature, Omar Khayyam, an overture miniature was featured. Lighter selections on the program included the John T. Hall waltz, Wedding Of The Winds, a trombone novelty by Karl King titled Mournful Maggie, and a medley of songs made popular by the great American movie and television songwriter, Henry Mancini. This collection includes the Peter Gunn theme, Baby Elephant Walk, Pink Panther theme, and Moon River, and is simply titled Mancini!
The program ended with the playing of our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.
